Finished: Teal Spider Riders unit

I decided to swap the colours of the feathers and spiders for the second unit. In all other respects, they were painted exactly as the previous unit. Even though in many respects they are exactly like the one from Battle for Skull Pass, the retail one gave the possibility to glue on bows to the backs of the models and 4 models were not one in one piece.

Finished: Second unit of Night Goblin Spearmen from Battle for Skull Pass

Not much to say about this one. The scheme was my usual one for Night Goblins. This is the last unit form the Battle for Skull Pass box, so the only thing left to be able to say that it is complete are the terrain pieces. I will get to them in due time, hopefully sooner than later.

Finished: Troll from Battle for Skull Pass

The troll (or maybe Common Troll?) is the penultimate unit left for the goblin side of the Battle for Skull Pass set. I remember that on the box art the miniature was mostly grey, but I've seen the photos on GW's website and decided to change the scheme a bit.

The Miniature

Old, monopose and chunky. Big, textured and awesome. Just the right amount of detail, a quick and fun miniature to paint.

The Scheme

  1. Slapchop underpainting
  2. Blinding Light, Ashen Stone, Bony Matter and Speedpaint Medium in 2:2:1:2 ratio for the belly, chest and lower part of the face and ears
  3. Desolate Brown for the rest of the body
  4. Burnt Moss for the pustules and scales
  5. Skeleton Horde for the bones, teeth, nails and rope
  6. Basilicaum Grey for the stones and statues
  7. Retributor Armour for the gold
  8. Volupus Pink for the inside parts of the wounds and scars
  9. Mephiston Red for the eyes
  10. Cygor Brown for the loincloth
  11. Leadbelcher for the metals
  12. Magic Blue for the shield nad necklace
  13. Dark Tone for the metals

Finished: Spider Riders from the Battle for Skull Pass box

The unit for today is the penultimate bigger one from the Battle for Skull Pass box. The only miniatures left are the second unit of Night Goblin Spearmen and the troll. The bases for this unit are a bit unusual, as they had a bit of a texture, as well as some spiders, rocks, skulls and stimps already sculpted! As always with goblins, I had fun painting those 10 miniatures.

The Miniatures

This sculpt is at leas as old as the box it came in. The funny part is that it is also the current sculpt in AoS. I dare say that it aged quite well! I also have the regular "modular" box, in which the torsos and arms come separate and the bodies don't have the bit to insert into their spiders - the goblins have to be glued to their mounts. These though, can be put onto the spiders without glue.

The Scheme

  1. Slapchop underpainting
  2. Blood Red (Army Painter) for the spider
  3. Black Templar (Citadel) for the bigger gaps in the carapace of the spiders and the background of the shield
  4. Plasmatic Bolt (Army Painter) for the small spiders on the base
  5. Basilicanum Grey (Citadel) for the rocks on the base and the riders
  6. Bony Matter (Army Painter) for the mandibles
  7. Ghillie Dew  (Army Painter)for the skin of the goblin
  8. Gore-grunta Fur (Citadel) for the loincloth
  9. Skeleton Horde for the straps and bone elements
  10. Terradon Turquise for the feathers
  11. Zealot Yellow (Army Painter) for the face of the shield
  12. Wyldwood (Citadel) for the wood
  13. Averland Sunset (Citadel) for the eyes of the spider
  14. Ushabti Bone (Citadel) for the teeth of the goblin
  15. Mephiston Red (Citadel) for the eyes of the goblin
  16. Leadbelcher (Citadel) for the metal elements
  17. Agrax Earthshade (Citadel) for the metal elements
  18. Leadbelcher (Citadel) drybrush for the metal spead
  19. Base: As all the other goblins

Finished: Dwarf Veteran Slayer

The model for today is a very old sculpt that I bought in a blister pack. Currently it is available for The Old World in a "Dwarf Slayers Command" box as one of the two veteran slayers to represent for example Giant Slayers. In lexicanum that sculpt was lavelled as a Daemon Slayer. Either way, it has a mohawk, giant axe and orange hair, so it is definitely a slayer!

To boost the orange a little I drybrushed Ryza Rust (Citadel) on the hair after applying Fire Giant Orange.

This miniature completes my current collection of fantasy dwarves (and is also the 100th miniature in projects painted this year ora the 96th model actually painted this year). I do intend to get some more dwarves in the future as I want the dwarf thane on a shield and some firedrakes,  but I don't plan on getting them in the near future.

Finished: Dwarf Thane from Battle for Skull Pass

The final model for the dwarven "half" of the Skull Pass box was finally stripped and repainted (it seems that I wasn't great in removing the paint goo from the helmet, though). The Thane leads his kin to achieve retribution for the grudges collected in the Book of Grudges. It was a reallu fun model to paint, with the only deviation for my normal scheme being Basilicanum Grey (Citadel) on the fur cloak and Blood Angels Red (Citadel) on the cloak.

This also brings the number of models from painted projects up to 99!

Finished: Dwarf Miners from Battle for Skull Pass

Today the dwarven miners join the little club of my painted models, bumping the painted models up to 98 project-wise.

Most of the scheme is exactly the same as for the other dwarven units. The only new elements here are: Blinding Light (AP) for the candles, Averland Sunset followed by Ryza Rust (both Citadel) on the candle flame and Ancient Honey for the lights inside the lanterns.

Those models were really pleasant to paint, as most of those old dwarves are. Just the thane left for the dwarven half of the Battle for Skull Pass box!

Finished: Dwarf Thunderers from Battle for Skull Pass

Today is day 111 of my hobby streak and at the same time painting at least one miniature per day. After getting the champion of the unit done (and as per usual I decided for him to be a greybeard) the Thunderers are finished. The scheme is very much the same as the one used for the Cannon and the Dwarf Warriors. The only difference is that I uses Gharagak Sewer instead of Wyldwood for the beards, as I used Wyldwood for the actual wooden stocks of their guns.

They were fun to paint, although I actually liked the warriors more. Either way, it's another unit from the Battle for Skull Pass box, which means that I have only the 8 Miners and Thane left to finish the dwarven "half" of the box. If my math checks out, I should paint the Miners this month (as they are on my schedule as the next project after the one that I start tomorrow). The Thane got stripped of paint and one decorative element of his helm broke off, but after getting him repaired and primed I'll paint him in a scheme similar to the one he was painted in those almost 20 years ago.

Finished: Dwarf Warriors from Battle of Skull Pass

Another portion of the Battle for Skull Pass box is finally complete. This 12 dwarf unit of warriors was to date my favourite squad to paint from that box, probably because I decided to have some variaty in the beard colours, so they seem more unique than the goblins. The scheme for them is basically the same as the one for the cannon crew, with one more beard colour: Snakebite Leather (Games Workshop). I really like the intense blue that I get with two coats of Magic Blue (Army Painter).

With this unit finished we also have oficially more painted models than in 2023!

Finished: Night Goblin Shaman from Battle for Skull Pass

Today's miniature is the second hero for the goblins' side of the set, namely the Night Goblin Shaman. The scheme is almost the same as for all the other Night Goblins, with the only alterations being Malignant Green (Army Painter) for the skin (as I decided the shamans will have lighter skin) and Frostheart (Games Workshop) for the mushrooms.

Although this is not my favourite goblin sculpt, it was enjoyable to paint (which is nice, as I have a second copy, which will be probably painted almost the same, with the only difference being the colour of the mushrooms).

Finished: Dwarf Dragon Slayer from Battle for Skull Pass

Today's finished model is the Dragon Slayer form the Battle for Skull Pass box. As all Slayers that didn't shave off their hair he paints it a vivid orange to show the other dwarves that he has no honor and seeks to regain it by dying an honorable death in combat with the biggest and meanest beast that he's able to find. From what I remember the Dragon Slayers are a few level above the Troll Slayers, which are the "basic troops" of dishonoured dwarves. This means that this hero character has been searching his death for quite some time and had faced many a terrible beast.

As for the paint scheme it is basically the same as the one for the crew of the Dwarven Cannon, with some steps ommited, as not all the elements are present (he's wearing only a belt, I had to paint naked dwarven buttcheeks). The only new paint here is Fire Giant Orange (Army Painter) used on the hair and beard.

Finished: First unit of Night Goblins Spearmen from Battle for Skull Pass

January was basically the month of Night Goblins. The last two were painted on Saturday and Sunday, but now here they are in all their greenskined, robed glory. They were painted in almost the same way as the previous two Night Goblin units, with the only difference being using Forest Sprite (Army Painter) for the skin. At some point I will probably repaint the skin of the other two units (oh boy, 40 models), but for now they will stay as they are.

This marks another finished unit form the Battle of Skullpass box. I have my fingers crossed that all the other models from that box and the accompanying terrain pieces will get some colours on them this year.

Finished: Night Goblin Big Boss from Battle for Skull Pass

Today's miniature is a Night Goblin Big Boss from Battle for Skull Pass, alongside his trusty squig. I decided to paint this model at the same time as the true model for today in the 1 miniature/day system, a Night Goblin spearman.

Almost all the steps for the miniature were the same, with the obvious difference being the squig. I used Nuclear Sunrise on the body, Ushabti Bone on the teeth and claws, Ahriman Blue on the eyes and then shaded it with Targor Rageshade.

This is one of two Night Goblin heroes from the box, the other one being a shaman. I have two copies of the shaman as I got one from a friend, alongside some Night Goblin archers that will get painted at some point to bolster the existing unit of 20.

Finished: Battle for Skull Pass Dwarven Cannon and Crew

For over a dozen days I've been painting Night Goblins (one each day). I wanted a palate cleanser, so I to test out the scheme for my Skull Pass Dwarves I picked up the cannon with its crew. I really like how this unit turned out and those models were a good warm-up before tackling the Dwarven Warriors that I want to paint after I finish the unit of goblins that is currently in progress.

If someone still has the contents of Battle for Skull Pass somewhere at home and would like to paint the cannon and crew in a similar manner, the recipes are down below

Cannon:

  • Leadbelcher (Citadel Paints) drybrysh all over
  • Retributor Armour (Citadel Paints) over details
  • Nuln Oil (Citadel Paints) wash
  • Light drybrush of Stormhost Silver (Citadel Paints)

Crew:

  • Guilliman Flesh (Citadel Paints) on the skin
  • 2 coats of Magic Blue (Army Painter) on the clothes
  • Satchel Brown (Army Painter) on leather elements and boots
  • Ashen Stone (Army Painter)/Skeleton Horde (Citadel Paints)/Ratling Grime (Citadel Paints) on hair and beards
  • Basilicanum Grey (Citadel Paints) on top of the thing to clean the cannon. It might be a ramrod.
  • Black Templar (Citadel Paints) on the hafts
  • Hardened Leather (Army Painter) on wooden elements
  • Leadbelcher (Citadel Paints) on most of the metal elements
  • Retributor Armour (Citadel Paints) on decorative metal elements
  • Nuln Oil (Citadel Paints) on metal elements
  • Stormhost Silver (Citadel Paints) drybrush over those metal elements that can be easily touched without getting paint on other details

The bases are made in exactly the same way as those of my Skull Pass goblins.

Painted: Night Goblins with hand weapons and shields

I managed to paint another unit of Night Goblins. These were bought around the time I got the Battle for Skullpass box - the shop where I bought my first miniatures was closing, so I caught some discounted boxes - it happened somewhere between 2006 and 2008, when I was in junior high school. I assembled them pretty quickly, but they just stood and waited afterwards.

Once again slapchop proved to be a godsend and those little buggers lend themselves splendidly to that technique. I painted them in the same scheme as the Night Goblin Archers from Battle for Skullpass, the only new colour here was the blue (Highlord Blue speedpaint) that I used for the mushrooms.

I'm quite happy with how they turned out, but after 40 Night Goblins I need a little palate cleanser. We'll see what It'll be, but I'm pretty sure that I'm going to tackle some more goblins in the near future, regardless.

Night Goblin Archers from Skullpass finished!

I have finally managed to finish painting some more miniatures. This time it's some night goblin archers from a very, very old starter set for WFB - Battle for Skullpass (it featured goblins vs dwarves). Those models were just sitting on the shelf and looking at me menacingly with their grey, unpainted eyes. They did it for years, and then I just put some Octarius terrain in front of them, but I still felt their gaze... So I prepared them for slapchop before Easter, managed to get most of the work done during the holidays and then finished those little buggers over the week and they look like this:

Painting this unit taught me a couple things. First of all, I don't want to paint one colour on 20 models at a time for the foreseeable future. Tackling so many models means more mistakes, tiring easily, and less noticeable progress. I'll try to paint 5 gobbos at once when I pick up the next unit (I have some more goblins on my desk, actually, this time with hand weapons and shields). Secondly, it's good to remember that red is placed opposite to green on the colour wheel - this meant I could easily fix mistakes with speedpaint when I missed an eyeball with red. Thirdly, a whole unit painted to this standard looks good enough (certainly better than bare plastic), it's faster than how I usually paint stuff and having a whole army painted up to this standard will look great on the battlefield!

If you want to know which paints I used, here you go:

  • Undercoat: Chaos Black

  • Drybrush: grey overbrush (Administratum Grey), white drybrush (Matt White)

  • Orc Skinfor the skin

  • Blood Red for the hoods

  • Grim Black for the robes

  • Hardened Leather for leather elements

  • Pallid Bone for elements such as the fletching, rope, wrappings etc.

  • Wyldwood for wooden elements

  • Zealot Yellow for the big moon standard

  • Leadbelcher for metal elements

  • Pallid Bone for elements that should be more brassy or bronze

  • Zealot Yellow for elements that should be... yellow. It doesn't look exactly like gold, but I liked the effect

  • Nuln Oil for the silver elements

  • Drybrush Runefang Steel on the silver elements

  • Ushabti Bone for teeth

  • Mephiston Red for eyes (I started with Evil Suns Scarlet but gave up)

  • Base: a mix of electrostatic grass and some old basing materials (like, 20 years old ones)

Did I paint them for any particular game? Not really. I really do intend to write a post about projects, eventually (and then another about painting goals). I painted those little buggers because I felt like it (and that's important, as it's a hobby), but obviously that does not mean that I don't want to use them in a game. First that comes to mins is Age of Fantasy: Regiments, but I could probably also play WFB if I found the rules and army book. In the upcoming Old World they will probably have larger bases, but from what I've heard, for casual play that's not going to be an issue and something can certainly be arranged to make it ok - like some converters of printing up some larger squares in fdm and gluing a magnet to the base and some magnetic tape to the print.

What is more, finishing this project means that right now I have more models painted than bought this year. I hope that I'll be able to keep this up (and there are some upcoming boxes that I really want to buy).
