This is one of the uncommon times when I actually paint something that I acquired recently. The models above come from the current starter for the Middle-Earth Strategy Battle Game. As you might know, the War of the Rohirrim: Battle of Edoras is the reward for painting 100 MESBG minis. The Hill Tribesmen are the core infantry for the Evil forces of the box.
The Models
The box comes with two sprues of those miniatures, with most of the bodies having a two equipment options. The poses are very dynamic and this can be see as an issue as they usually have only one foot on the ground which makes it very likely that they fall of their bases at least once. I've heard that they are difficult and troublesome to build, but I do not agree. They are more complex than most MESBG miniatures, that is true, but not more complex than other GW kits.
The Scheme
My colour choices come from THIS video by Warhipster. I decided to skip the last drybrush and convert the scheme to work with Slapchop. The effect is as follows:
- Slapchop underpainting
- Grey Seer on the skin
- Black Legion for the boots and bows, arrow shafts, the tar covered rags on the brands and the belts
- Wyldwood for legwraps, bracers and wood
- Ratling Grime for the skirt above the wraps, and for the sleeves if they are present
- Cygor Brown for the layer above (if present)
- Garaghak's Sewer for the layer above rhat (if present)
- Snakebite Leather for the layer above that (if present) and the trousers
- Black Templar/Skeleton Horde for the fur
- Black Templar/Nuln Oil, Black Legion/ Agrax Earthshade/Basilicanum Grey for the hair
- Guilliman Flesh for the skin
- Ancient Honey on the flame then Fire Giant Orange leaving some of the yellow behind, then Red Angels Green for the upper half followed by Black Templar on the tips
- Irron Warriors for the metals
- Nuln Oil for the metals
- Iron Hands Steel drybrush on the metals
